TANZANIA, AFRICA

The six-week Ethnographic Field School in Tanzania offers students a thorough understanding of nutrition and health challenges faced by people in East Africa in cultural, economic, and political contexts.  The program offers this understanding through practical training in field research that specifically examines interactions between cultural traditions and practices, regional environments, changing political landscapes, and local, national, and international economic trends.

INDEPENDENT RESEARCH IN TANZANIA

My independent  research project was titled “Commensal Eating Patterns: An Ethnographic Study of Lutengano Secondary School in Rural Southwest Tanzania”. Ultimately, I concluded that building a meal became identical to building a relationship, and without personal relationships that build obligation through food, it would become difficult for the students of the Secondary School to construct a meal at lunchtime.

CAMEROON, AFRICA

The Dickinson in Cameroon program enables students to develop an understanding of West Africa and of Cameroonian culture and society in particular.  This is achieved through a number of selected courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as through internship and fieldwork opportunities that give students a chance to become active participants in Cameroonian society.  Most students live with Cameroonian host families, giving them unparalleled insight into family life in the capital city of Yaounde.
